DIABETES

Diabetes Care Clinic - Sylva (Jackson Cnty. Health Dept.)
Program for uninsured patients with diabetes. Includes doctors visits a couple of times a month, labs and medications.

Diabetes Classes - Sylva (Jackson Cnty. Coop. Ext.)
Jackson NC Cooperative Extension works with the health department to provide a diabetes education program. Also offers periodic diabetes nutrition classes, such as Dining with Diabetes and Diabetes Plate.

Diabetes Education - Robbinsville (Graham Cnty. Health Dept.)
One-on-one counseling provided for a fee. Program recognized by the ADA, so cost may be covered by insurance.

Diabetes Classes - Cherokee (Cherokee Indian Hospital)
With a physician's referral, a patient can participate in one of two diabetes programs offered AT the hospital: Diabetes MNT or Diabetes IPC.

Kitchen Creations - Cherokee (Diabetes Program)
Series of free cooking classes is designed to guide you towards a healthy eating lifestyle.

Life Savor's: Savoring the Sweet Life - Sylva (Jackson Cnty. Health Dept.)
This is a diabetes self-management education program.

Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT) - Cherokee (Diabetes Program)
     Sylva (Jackson Cnty. Health Dept.)
With a physician's referral, a patient can receive MNT for conditions such as Hyperlipidemia, Obesity, Diabetes, Renal Disease and Malnutrition.

Thriving with Diabetes - Cherokee (Diabetes Program)
This diabetes self-management course teaches you to get fit and feel better while having fun and meeting new friends.

EFNEP for Adults - Bryson City (Swain Cnty. Coop. Ext.)
The goal of the Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP) is to provide educational opportunities that will improve the nutritional quality of a family's diet and ensure its full use of available resources.

Employee Wellness Program - Cherokee (Cherokee Choices/Wellness Program)
Open to all tribal employees.

Good Cook Series - Sylva (Jackson Cnty. Coop. Ext.)
Year-long program features good cooks in the county and inspires people to get back in the kitchen.

Market Voucher Program - Bryson City
Program open to clients of the Bryson City Food Pantry. Clients can use vouchers as payment for produce at Swain County Farmers Market.

Women's, Infants and Children (WIC) is a supplemental food program for women, infants and children. You may be eligible if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or have a child less than 5 years of age.

Birdtown Walking Club - Cherokee
Come join other Birdtown community members to get some steps.

Cherokee Runners - Cherokee
Runners of any fitness level and age can join the club for a low cost.

Curves - Sylva
An exercise program just for women. The system provides a complete cardio and strength training workout in 30 minutes. Monthly membership is $44, but discount packages are available.

Employee Walking Club - Cherokee (Cherokee Choices/Wellness Program)
Find support in increasing your physical activity level while having fun and earning prizes. Open to all tribal employees.

Fitness Challenge - Cherokee (Cherokee Choices)
Ten week program free and open to all ages.

Fitness Programs - Bryson City (Swain Cnty. Rec. Dept.)
Year 'round programs for adults and youths and includes outdoor areas as well as an indoor recreation facility.

Fitness Programs - Cullowhee (Jackson Cnty. Rec. Dept.)
Offers over 20 different fitness classes. Monthly memberships or daily admission available for a low cost.

Group Fitness Classes - Bryson City (Bryson City Health & Fitness)
Classes such as beginning aerobics, step aerobics and lunch-time cardio are taught by trained instructors. A day pass costs $5 and several plans are available.

Martial Arts - Sylva (Martial Arts Today)
Tai Chi, Karate and Kung Fu classes are open to all ages.

Mixed Martial Arts – Cherokee (Birdtown Gym)
Free to anyone wishing to learn and open to both males and females, these classes combine fighter training with a cardio workout. Classes are offered 5-7 pm, Wednesdays and Thursdays.

Sport, Fitness and Recreation Programs - Cherokee (Life Center)
Programs in Sports, Fitness and Recreation develop fitness, positive use of leisure time, skills for stress management, appreciation for the environment and social skills.

Yoga Classes - Bryson City (Be Free Yoga)
Classes offered include Gentle/Beginner Yoga, Morning Flow Yoga and All Levels Yoga Body Burn. Rates are reasonable: drop in rate $10, 5-class pass $45, 10-class pass $80.

Yoga Classes - Cherokee (Cherokee Choices)
Free yoga classes offered Monday 5:00 pm & Tuesdays and Wednesdays at noon. Classes are 45 minutes long with a 15 minute Living Your Yoga activity following (optional).

Yoga Classes - Sylva (Sylva Yoga)
Beginning Yoga, All Levels Yoga and Meditation classes are offered. First class is free for locals.

Zumba - Cherokee (Cherokee Choices)
Latin dance aerobic video series.

WEIGHT MANAGEMENT

Community Native Lifestyle Balance – Cherokee (Cherokee Choices)
A Community Challenge to reduce the risk for diabetes by losing weight and increasing physical activity. Classes are interactive and open to all (age 8 and older). Coming January 2011.

Eat Smart, Move More, Weigh Less / Cooperative Extensive Service Offices -      Bryson City, Murphy, Robbinsville, Sylva
Weight management program for all ages uses strategies proven to work.

Employee Wellness Program – Cherokee (Cherokee Choices/Wellness)
Open to all tribal employees.

Fire & Rescue Wellness Program – Cherokee (Cherokee Choices)
Health assessments are given quarterly and health education is provided by request to the Cherokee Fire & Rescue Team.

All levels welcome, age 12 and over. Working towards completing a 5K in the fall.

Weight Management Classes - Cherokee (Cherokee Indian Hospital)
With a physician's referral, a patient can participate in this program, which includes individual counseling and a group session on the last Tuesday of each month.

Weight Watchers - Bryson City (First Baptist Church)
Weight loss program for a fee that uses a points system to help you make healthy choices. Group support meetings are 6pm on Thursdays at this location.

YOUTH PROGRAMS

After-School Program - Cherokee (Cherokee Choices)
Enhances the team-work, cultural awareness and physical health of students at Cherokee Central Schools.

Be Active Kids - Robbinsville (Graham Cnty. Coop. Ext.)
Trains teenagers to be advocates for physical activity.

Programs in Health and Life Skills develop young people's capacity to engage in positive behaviors that nurture their own well-being, set personal goals and live successfully as self-sufficient adults.

Health Rocks - Murphy (Cherokee Cnty. Coop. Ext.)
Teaches 4th and 5th graders about nutrition and physical activity.

Jus Boyz Running Club - Bryson City
School-age boys run for an hour on Wednesdays for six weeks during the school year. Boys enjoy running in the woods with older male running buddies and running in several 5k races.

Martial Arts - Sylva (Martial Arts Today)
